| What is Gingivitis?
Gingivitis is a dental disease that exhibits symptoms of bleeding, swelling and some pain.
The cause is poor oral hygiene and bacteria from food that has not been removed from between the teeth. This bacteria then starts to attack the gums. This is where the real problem starts. The bacteria then causes the loss of bone that is holding your teeth in place and eventually left untreated the teeth will begin to fall out or need to be extracted.
This is known as Periodontal Disease. It sounds scary and it is!!!
No one really wants to lose their teeth. It is painful and expensive. At Active Dental we show our patients how to look after their gums at their hygiene appointments. You need to be the dental professional at home between visits as a lot can happen with your gums in 6 months.
Periodontal disease is now also linked to diabetes, arteriosclerosis, osteoporosis, pancreatic cancer and pre-term low birth weight babies.
We don't want any of our patients to have periodontal disease. If there is an area of your gum that is bleeding then you need to have it looked at ASAP. If you have bleeding gums don't wait to contact us tomorrow, you need to ring today for an appointment.
